Components of data communication in Data communication and computer networks for UGC NET Computer Science notes

In this post let us understand components of data communication in a simple way.

Introduction:

I hope you know about data communication.If you don't know please check my previous post in Unit 9 page of my blog.I tell the definition of data communication.

Definition:

Data communication means the exchange of data between two devices through a transmission medium such as cable,WiFi etc.

If we want to share  data through network,we need components to send your data.Now we see what the components are for data communication.

Data communication  has five components:

  • Sender
  • Message
  • Transmission medium
  • Protocol
  • Receiver

Sender:

The sender is the device that sends the message.It can be a computer, workstation, telephone handset, video camera and so on 

Message:

The message is the information (data) to be communicated. Popular forms of information include text, numbers, pictures, audio, and video.

Transmission medium:

The transmission medium is the physical path by which a message travels from sender to receiver. 

Some examples of transmission media include twisted-pair wire, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, and radio waves.

Protocol:

A protocol is a set of rules that govern data communications. It represents an agreement between the communicating devices. 

Without a protocol, two devices may be connected but not communicating, just as a person speaking French cannot be understood by a person who speaks only Japanese.

Receiver:

The receiver is the device that receives the message. It can be a computer, workstation, telephone handset, television,and so on.

Look at the above diagram,it shows you how the data is transmitted between sender and receiver through transmission medium.
