Simplex, Half-Duplex, Duplex Modes of Communication in Data Communication and Computer Networks for UGC NET Computer Science notes

In this post let us understand  modes of communication.

Introduction:

We know that Data communication means the exchange of data between two devices through transmission medium such as cable or WiFi etc.

Now we are going to learn how many ways to data is transmitted from sender to receiver in data communication.The way data transmitted is called as Modes of Communication.

Modes of Communication means the different ways of transmitting the data from sender to receiver in a network.

There are three types of modes in data communication.

  • Simplex
  • Half-Duplex
  • Full-Duplex

Simplex

  • In Simplex mode , communication is unidirectional.
  • One of the two devices on a link can transmit ;the other can only receive.
  • The simplex mode can use the entire capacity of the channel to send data in one direction

For example:

 Keyboard and Monitor are examples of simplex mode.

Keyboard can only produce input.Monitor can only accept output.


This diagram shows the simplex mode of communication.

Half-Duplex 

  • In Half-duplex mode,the communication is two-way directional ,but not at the same time.
  • When one device is sending,the other device can only receive the message.
  • The half-duplex mode is used in cases where there is no need for communication in both directions at the same time
  •  The entire capacity of the channel can be utilized for each direction.

For example:

Walkie-talkies and CB (citizens band) radios are both half-duplex systems.


This diagram shows  half-Duplex mode of communication.

Full duplex:

  • In full duplex mode, the communication is bidirectional.
  • Sender and Receiver can transmit and receive simultaneously.
  • In Full-Duplex mode, signals going in one direction share the capacity of the link.with signals going in the other direction.
  • The capacity of the channel is divided between signals travelling in both directions.

For example:

Telephone Network.

When two people are communicating by a telephone line, both can talk and listen at the same time.
